The French program at V.I.S. builds on the AIM Language Learning model. The program utilizes a gesture-based approach and incorporates drama, music, and dance to help students gain fluency, confidence and a joy of language learning. The program is both motivational and academically rigorous. It is designed to provide an experiential foundation and to develop a range of essential skills in reading, writing, and oral language, including a foundation in grammar, vocabulary and comprehension. The AIM program’s extensive and creative use of story and drama motivates and engages students, while building a strong academic foundation in core French skills.
Oral Communication
There is a strong emphasis on developing the oral communication skills needed to understand and interact with others, and to express oneself clearly and with confidence. Our program gives students numerous opportunities to use French for real purposes and in real situations through role play, class discussions, and immersion in French. The dynamic use of gestures supports comprehension and fluency.
Reading
Reading is used to build a bridge between speech and writing. In learning to read French texts, students are able to enhance the knowledge and skills developed through oral communication, in order to understand and respond to written materials.
Writing
There is an emphasis in the French program on the meaningful application of the conventions of written language – grammar, spelling and vocabulary. The AIM approach focuses on high frequency language skills, helping students to produce writing that is authentic, meaningful and relevant to daily life.
