Mathematics

Our mathematics program presents students with a challenge by addressing concepts (in number sense and numeration; patterning and algebra; measurement; data management and probability; and geometry) through lessons, classroom work and group investigations; and through reinforcement in homework assignments and if needed, additional help before or after school.

Currently, we are implementing change intended to prepare students for transition to secondary school, by introducing concepts at the grade level above that which students are enrolled in. We find that students thrive in an environment where they are challenged regularly and are not confined to grade level expectations.

However, at V.I.S. we understand that mathematics should by no means be confined to a textbook. It is impossible to develop a solid understanding of interrelated concepts strictly through lessons, rote, and/or through the memorization of facts. Thus, the language of mathematics acquires meaning as well as an identity in relation to real life applications. The goal in our mathematics curriculum then, is to assist students in understanding mathematics as an interconnected framework of logic that applies to the world around them. We balance lessons in basic skills, with hands-on problem solving activities, and through the integration of mathematics into other curriculum areas.

Beyond working through the textbook, our students will find themselves involved in projects that address skills in measurement and numeration. They will develop budgets needed to plan field trips and fundraisers. They will create graphs to display a diverse range of data. They will apply their knowledge of concepts by designing and building sets for our school performances. To further lend relevance to our program, curriculum content is also drawn from other relevant sources, such as banks, home/building developers, newspapers, magazines, grocery stores and architecture.

Before School Math Clinic and Math Buddies
Beyond our school Math Clinic we offer Math Buddies, a mentoring program led by students who have a solid understanding of the material, and who are able to provide one-on-one support. Not only is this a quintessential aspect of our math program, but it also affords students valuable opportunities to develop leadership and mentoring skills.
